The Artists' Oral History Project

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

This project explores how an artist’s oral history can contribute to the visitor’s experience of museum exhibitions. Oral history can be a powerful tool to tell a story about the motivations, inspirations and process of creating art. These stories can give museum visitors an access point to gain a deeper understanding of art pieces and exhibitions. This project draws from research on oral history, artists’ voices, and artists’ biographies; it offers guidelines for the oral history component of an art exhibition as well as a project management plan to: research established oral histories, conduct interviews with artists and archive the content collected. After compiling, synthesizing and interpreting these oral histories, curators, museum educators, exhibition designers and other museum content creators can incorporate artists’ narratives into exhibition spaces.
