Computer-Aided Analysis of Photoelastic Images

The use of a computer to analyze two-dimensional images, such as photographs of a photoelastic fringe pattern, is explored. The problems of object identification, fringe location, fringe ordering, partial fringe determination, stress separation, system calibration, experimental noise, and recording media are discussed. Experimental results for disk and a square plate are presented and analyzed by a computer program. A listing of a photoelastic image processing program is included. The results of this study indicate a great potential for the use of computer-aided image analysis in the field of experimental stress analysis.
