The problems of object identification, fringe location, fringe ordering, partial fringe determination, stress separation, system calibration, experimental noise, and recording media are discussed. Experimental results for disk and a square plate are presented and analyzed by a computer program. A listing of a photoelastic image processing program is included. The results of this study indicate a great potential for the use of computer-aided image analysis in the field of experimental stress analysis.","abstract_html":"The use of a computer to analyze two-dimensional images, such as photographs of a photoelastic fringe pattern, is explored.
