An analysis of the preclassic households beneath the main plaza at Colha, Belize

"In examining the Preclassic remains beneath the Main Plaza at Colha, Belize, this thesis seeks to test criteria for determining structure function, via household analysis. The criteria employed in differentiating between domestic and public contexts are generally the same as those used in the analysis of households. These include dwellings, outbuildings such as kitchens or storerooms, activity areas, hearths, storage pits, refuse deposits, simple burials of both sexes and all age groups, as well as utilitarian lithic and ceramic artifacts. ... This study employs such criteria as mentioned above in interpreting the function of the five structures found beneath the Main Plaza. It is also hoped that the evaluation of the attributes of the structures, features (hearths and burials), primary middens and artifact assemblages, will better illuminate the domestic lifeways of the people who occupied the structures and the role they may have played in the community"--Introduction.
