Narrative Fidelity to the Little Red Book in the Collective Action Framing Efforts of the Red Guard Movement: A Theoretical Model for Foundational Documents

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The contribution of this thesis is to the cultural paradigm in social movement theory. I am interested in how texts matter to social movements. I present a novel synthesis of concepts I use to uncover ideological elements in texts. I argue that foundational documents influence frame presentations, and that texts steer the early stages of mobilization efforts. The Red Guard movement was promoting radical changes during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. The categories I identify are used to explore how the Red Guard was able to build a frame around the major themes in the Little Red Book. No social science discipline has properly combined these concepts into a working theoretical model. I invented the foundational document model through a triangulation of social science literature. The six core categories of the foundational document model are role attribution, folklore narrative, ethical norms, utopian schemes, strategic planning, and motivational appeals. This theoretical model is meant to be broadly applicable and useful for pinpointing ideological elements in texts.
