Education Needs of New Mothers: A Comparison of Prenatal and Postnatal Women's Perceptions

<p>This study was conducted in an attempt to identify information items new mothers rate as important and identify areas of agreement and disagreement between prenatal mothers and postnatal mothers. The objectives of the study were to:<br> 1. Describe prenatal and postnatal women's perceptions regarding the level of importance attributed to the following categories (see Appendix A for items under each component).<br> I. Infant Care Education:<br> a. Type of feeding<br> b. Bathing your baby<br> c. Diapering<br> d. Infant behavior/characteristics<br> e. Safety of baby<br> f. Jaundice<br> g. Circumcision<br> II. Mother's Care Education;<br> a. Breast care<br> b. Mother's danger signs<br> c. Mother's recovery<br> d. Nutrition<br> e. Mother's activity<br> f. Sexual relations<br> g. Emotional adjustments<br> 2. Describe prenatal and postnatal women's perceptions regarding the placement of information in four teaching time periods related to the following categories (See Appendix A for items under each component).<br> I. Infant Care Education<br> a. Type of feeding<br> b. Bathing your baby<br> c. Diapering<br> d. Infant behavior/characteristics<br> e. Safety of baby<br> f. Jaundice<br> g. Circumcision<br> II. Mother's Care Education<br> a. Breast care<br> b. Mother's danger signs<br> c. Mother's recovery<br> d. Nutrition<br> e. Mother's activity<br> f. Sexual relations<br> g. Emotional adjustments<br> 3. Determine whether there is a significant difference between prenatal and postnatal women's perceptions regarding the importance of information items offered to new mothers.<br> 4. Determine whether there is a significant difference between prenatal and postnatal women's perceptions regarding the four teaching time periods for receiving information.</p>
