Toxic effects of aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures isolated from crude oils to blue mussels (Mytilus edulis)

dc:description.abstractThis thesis studies the narcotic toxicity of complex fractions of total aromatic and monoaromatic hydrocarbons isolated from four different crude oils. The blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) biotest used shows a reduction of mussel feeding activity after 24 h exposure with increasing aqueous and tissue concentrations. The fractions of total and monoaromatic hydrocarbons exert similarly strong toxic effects as evidenced by TEC50 values. Different composition of the fractions due to different levels of in-reservoir biodegradation of the oils does not influence their toxicity. However, sulphur-containing aromatic compounds seem to enhance oil toxicity. A special focus of the study is the investigation of the significance of the unresolved complex mixtures (UCMs) for the toxicity of the fractions. Data shows that UCMs contribute essentially to the overall toxicity.
