Pore water biogeochemistry and trace metal dynamics in deep intertidal flat sediments

Biogeochemical processes were studied in deep pore waters at different locations in the backbarrier area of Spiekeroog Island, Germany. A multilevel in situ pore water sampler was developed, which allows pore water sampling down to 5 m sediment depth. Sulphate, DOC, and nutrients were studied for the identification of organic matter remineralization pathways. Differences in sediment structure and hydrological conditions explain spatial variations in pore water depth profiles of margins compared to central parts of tidal flats as well as of sand and mixed flats. The deep pore water studies illustrate that seasonal variations of sulphate, DOC, and nutrients are not limited to the sediment surface. Seasonal variations of Mn, Fe, Mo, and U are by contrast limited to the upper decimetres of the sediment. Close to the tidal flat margin pore waters originating from some metres depth presumably escape at tidal flat margins at low tide thus representing a source for the ecosystem in the open water column.
