Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Taking number-theoretic and algebraic texts as examples, the development of the scientific language of mathematics is examined from a lexical and semantic perspective. The focus is on the modelling of scientific concept formation, the analysis of the forms and functions of metaphors and analogies, and the theory of semantic change in the language of science. On the basis of a functional definition of the notion 'language of science' a model of scientific concept formation, which is the basis of various case studies, is developed. The terms under investigation are mainly taken from algebra. The different forms of semantic change and their causes, as they have been developed in historical semantics, can all be found in the language of mathematics as well. It is demonstrated that semantic 'leaps', as they occur in general language, are not found in mathematics. Metaphors and analogies are analysed in terms of their functions (e.g., their programmatic and potentially theory
