Factors influencing acoustical localization

Head related transfer functions describe the physical properties that can be used by the auditory system to localize acoustical sound sources. At first, a measurement setup (TASP-System) is presented and validated in this theesis, that is capable of measuring HRTFs with a high spatial resolution and that can also be used for psychacoustic localization measurements. The physical properties of HRTFs and the effect of spectral smoothing on the physical localization cues are investigated in another section. In order to investigate the perceptual robustness of the auditory system to distortions of the individual HRTFs, psychoacoustics discrimination experiments are described, in which temporal and spectral properties of the HRTFs are varied. These experiments were conducted in non-reverberant and reverberant environments. Lastly, the effect of a monaural spectral cue in the spectrum of the sound source (that could be introduced by 'spectral scrambling') on the elevation perception is investigated.
