Geochemical tracers in the deep-sea and the North Sea

This thesis contains manuscripts about the inorganic geochemistry of the deep-sea and the North Sea, which have been published or submitted for publication. Typical element/Al ratios indicate eolian, continental input of loess material during the last Heinrich-events. In the Arabian Sea, the climatic influence on the scavenging intensity of 230 Th xs could be demonstrated over the last 100 ka. During cold periods, a high input of the Indus river occurs, while in warm periods biogenic particle flux prevails. In the North Sea, mainly the anthropogenic impact on the coastal environment was studied. Heavy minerals indicate higher currents velocities, leading to a loss of fine fraction in recent tidal flat sediments. Today, heavy metal rich clay particles are only to a small extent deposited in the Wadden Sea area. The remaining permeable, anoxic sediments cause a high redox activity that is mainly indicated by an intense exchange of Mn and Fe.
