Reproduction of coastal birds breeding in the Wadden Sea: variation, influencing factors and monitoring

The study was aimed to determine breeding success including its variability of coastal birds breeding in the Wadden Sea. A further aim was to assess the contribution of current breeding success to population trends of single species. The studies were conducted during the mid 1990s and at the beginning of the 2000s investigating six frequent breeding bird species at 17 breeding sites throughout the German part of the Wadden Sea area. In general, hatching and breeding success was higher on islands than at the mainland coast. In 1997, most species bred more successful than in 1996. A significant effect of various weather parameters as well as of habitat and nest-site supply on hatching and breeding success was shown. Breeding success explained population trends in only three species. Causes of variation in breeding success are discussed and recommendations on salt marsh management as well as on population monitoring and monitoring of breeding success are given.
