Deflation in China (1997 - 2000)

In the 1990's and after the turn of the century, the problem of deflation dramatically emerged in China and in other countries. Since the 'open door' policy the economy in China has been growing relatively fast. Available statistical data reveal that the growth process in China between 1997 and 2000 was accompanied by a deflation. The economic development in China is observed with great attention in business circles and by scientists. The goal of this dissertation is the theoretical and economic research into the causations and effects of deflation in China. Western economic theories are used as the basis for the analysis of the Chinese economic growth during the transformation from the central planned economy to the market economy. The special characteristics in China are considered in the development of these theories. The emphasis of this work is on the development of an economic cum empirical model. With the help of this model, the crucial factors influencing the price level in China are identified, and the various reciprocal actions in the national economy are recognisable.
