Habitat models for plant functional groups with respect to soil parameters and management

The presented thesis aims on finding out whether it is possible to substitute conventional annual mowing by less costly alternative management strategies, i.e. permanent pastures with low stocking densities and massive cyclic disturbances of the vegetation cover by roto-tilling, to preserve the local and regional floristic species pool. For this purpose presence/absence data of the occurring plant species were recorded along with abiotic parameters such as soil and climatic factors and management strategy on variously utilised investigation plots. For selected species biological traits were recorded. On their basis species were grouped into biological types. With the aid of stepwise logistic regression the most important habitat factors were identified determining the occurrence of these plant functional groups (PFGs). Furthermore, habitat models were developed. With these models it is possible to predict the probabilities of occurrence for the PFGs under certain environmental conditions and utilisation regimes, and statements can be made on the probability of extinction of PFGs under the investigated management practices.
