Organisch-geochemische Untersuchungen der Oberflächengewässer aus dem Einzugsgebiet der Sielacht Esens (Ostfriesland)

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

This thesis presents results of organic-geochemical investigations of surface waters from the catchment area of the Sielacht Esens. Pyrolysis-GC/MS with TMAH (tetramethylammonium hydroxide) was used to characterize the DOM fractions on a molecular level. The obtained results are compared with the oxidative degradation by cupric oxide (CuO). Ratios of lignin-derived compounds are indicative of the extent of oxidative degradation and suggest a highly degraded state of the lignin compounds in all samples. Samples from different locations show largely uniform molecular compositions of each of the DOM fractions. The results of molecular DOM analysis do not indicate significant seasonal variations. The compound class distribution of free lipids in the particulate organic matter (POM) has proven to be more suitable to reveal regional and seasonal variations. Parameters deduced from specific lipids clearly reflect seasonal variations of the lipid composition of the POM. Based on an extended data set of DOC measurements the annual DOC export into the backbarrier tidal flats of Spiekeroog island was estimated.
