A Study of Teachers' Perceptions and Attitudes Concerning Children's Fears

The purpose of this study was to determine if fifth and sixth grade teachers recognize those fears that children identify as their greatest fears. Additionally, this study was to determine teachers' attitudes toward helping children understand and deal with their fears and to determine what classroom teachers are now doing with this topic in their classrooms. Fifth and sixth grade classroom teachers were surveyed to determine their opinions of children's greatest fears and to determine if the topic of fears is included in school curriculums. The analysis of data indicated that most teachers were aware of children's greatest fears. Further, the data revealed that teachers do not plan and implement activities, as units of study. The issue of fears is handled only after the fear is expressed by a child or group of children.
