Joaquín Larregla Urbieta (1865-1945). Vida, obra y técnica pianística

Joaquín Larregla Urbieta (Lumbier, Navarra, 1865 - Madrid, 1945) was one of the representative figures of composition, teaching, and Spanish interpretation during one of the most prosperous periods of pianistic literature worldwide. The rise of romanticism and nationalist movements coincided with the technical and mechanical perfection of the piano, in an era where the passion for travel and exploring the unique in art increased, which in turn heightened the presence of Spanish musicians in other countries and the arrival of great foreign figures in Spain, foreign musicians who are recognized as composers, concert artists, and founders of technical piano schools. Frédéric Chopin, Franz Liszt, and the American Louis M. Gottschalk are explicitly recognized as prestigious composers and pianists, alongside the Spanish Isaac Albéniz and Enrique Granados in our country. However, other prominent personalities worth considering in these same fields of writing and piano interpretation were overshadowed, and perhaps as a consequence, they were not given the recognition they deserved, likely because they coincided in time with the aforementioned figures. Joaquín Larregla began his artistic journey fitting the profile of a child prodigy on the piano, soon becoming a recognized concert pianist on Spanish and European stages, especially in Italy, France, and Switzerland. He is the author of an extensive catalog of works for piano, in addition to cultivating vocal, chamber, and orchestral genres. This research aims to bring to light the contributions and creative work of Larregla, by uncovering a composer who pays special attention to writing and piano technique, with the mark of a virtuosic pianist showcasing true technical feats alongside lyrical introspections. These qualities are also utilized for the training of future concert performers during his teaching period at the Royal Conservatory of Music of Madrid. To complement the roles of composer, concert performer, and educator, his academic aspect is highlighted through his membership in the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. All of this completes a multifaceted profile in Spain at the time through a legacy that is as unknown as it is little interpreted.
