Abstract
dc:description.abstract<p>This thesis includes documents discovered by the</p> <p>author while conducting research on Jan van Scorel in The</p> <p>Netherlands and the implications of these documents. The</p> <p>archival information brings the author to a two-fold conclusion:</p> <p>l)that the Italianate style in the North Netherlands in</p> <p>the 16th century was sponsored and spread in court circles</p> <p>and that Jan van Scorel, in particular, found favorable contact</p> <p>with the aristocracy throughout his career, and 2) that</p> <p>Scorel' s vision, perhaps given additional direction by the</p> <p>patronage of the Dutch court circle in the Vatican, was influenced</p> <p>by the contemporary Roman art scene thus implicating</p> <p>him the period style known as Mannerism.</p>
