Certified Registered Nurse Anesthesiologists' Self-Efficacy Regarding Workplace Incivility

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Purpose. This quality improvement project aimed to increase certified registered nurse anesthesiologists’ knowledge of workplace incivility and their self-efficacy in responding to uncivil behaviors. Background. Workplace incivility occurs at a high rate within healthcare and the perioperative areas. Incivility experienced by healthcare providers has detrimental effects on their patient care and personal well-being. Educational offerings that increase knowledge of workplace incivility and provide methods for approaching uncivil behaviors increase provider self-efficacy when addressing future incivilities. Methods. An evidence-based educational session on workplace incivility that included cognitive rehearsal exercises was presented to certified registered nurse anesthesiologists. A post-pre retrospective survey utilizing Qualtrics was distributed after the presentation to assess a perceived increase in levels of self-efficacy in addressing incivilities. Results. Twelve CRNAs completed the post-pre survey following the educational presentation. Data were analyzed, evaluating participant response scores. A Wilcoxon rank-signed test revealed an overall statistically significant increase in self-efficacy in addressing incivilities after the presentation, as evidenced by a p-value of < 0.05 (z = -9.06). Conclusions. The results of this quality improvement project support a workplace incivility educational session incorporating cognitive rehearsal to improve CRNAs’ self-efficacy in addressing workplace incivilities.
