A study of the garbage pickers within the Port Shepstone disposal site
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThe aim of this study is to investigate the socio-economic status of the garbage picker and the nature of the garbage picking activity. The majority of the pickers were found to be housed in the nearby informal settlements and had an earning potential that was far below the Poverty Datum Line. The investigation highlights this poverty and exposes the exploitation in terms of the resale of recuperated items. The items served many purposes and includes the provision of building material for "shacks".
