However, very little research has thoroughly examined the association between inflammatory markers and neurocognitive outcome post-stroke. Our main goal was to examine the existing literature and this association between inflammatory markers and post-stroke functioning, primarily by examining the tools and methods chosen by researchers to assess neurocognitive outcomes. A systematic literature search retrieved 954 articles to review against inclusion criteria. A total of 21 articles were included in this review. Across the studies, we identified two common themes: 1) lack of research into the diverse stroke populations; and 2) lack of comprehensive neurocognitive measures. Our findings show that research on the area of inflammation and neurocognitive outcome post-stroke has been inconsistent in terms of the methods used, and our conclusions will direct future research exploring the role of inflammatory markers in prediction of cognitive functioning post-stroke.","abstract_html":"The role of inflammation in neurological prognosis of stroke has been studied previously.
