Tabous et transgressions sexuels dans l'œuvre de Michel Tremblay. Une étude psycho-sociocritique
Abstract
dc:description.abstractMichel Tremblay's work is unique in its particular attention attributed to sexual taboos. Homosexuals, transvestites, prostitutes and incestuous love dominate Tremblay's work and play multiple, complex and fascinating roles. Through a psycho-sociocritical analysis of a corpus of drama and fiction works, representing the topic of taboos and sexual transgressions between the years 40's to 90's of the 20th century, our aim was to first show the dominating presence and the symbolic impact of sexual taboos on the writers imagination. Before the Quiet Revolution, these taboos are omnipresent in Quebec and several of Tremblay's characters manifest this fact, facing identity, psychological and moral issues, related to their personal, family and private life. One could say that any sexual behavior, which deviates from the norm, becomes a taboo at that time. Yet, Tremblay dreams of a more egalitarian society, based on the feeling of love, tolerance and the respect for difference. He speaks openly, as one of the first in Quebec literature, of these very sensitive issues, at a time when Quebec enters into a phase of radical modernization. Nevertheless, as a whole, the works studied, regardless of genres, belong to a tragic vein and the conflicts that are present there oscillate between rebellion and submission, transgression and acceptation. Our intention was to point out that vision of Tremblay's world is to a certain extent more exact and deeper than the representation conveyed about this period through political, historic and sociological speeches. It illustrates the difficult transition of traditional Quebec culture towards a modern society, with the issues concerning collective and individual values and the conflicts, or else the tragedies that it gave birth to.
