Changing The Vantage Point Of Nurses Toward Evidence-Based Practice: Embedding Storytelling Into A Novel On-Demand Micro-Learning Program

<p> CMS withholds billions in payments to fund VBP and incentivize hospitals to improve care. Achievements in TPS, which includes patient satisfaction and safety domains, is an opportunity to earn back incentive payments. Advancing nurses' adoption of EBP helps keep patients safe, improves satisfaction, and supports hospital financial viability (Kemp et al., 2023). However, gaps exist in the competency and application of EBP (Melnyk et al., 2018). A curriculum was developed to improve nurses' perceptions of EBP value. A storytelling, micro-learning approach was utilized to deliver the EBP-relevant knowledge. The digital platform provided on-demand, unlimited re-entry features that optimized flexibility, convenience, and control with a mobile device responsive design. This model program aimed to increase hospital-based nurses' understanding and beliefs about the value of EBP adoption. Voluntary participant RNs had at least one year of experience. Anonymous access links were used, and participants had five weeks to complete the series of six videos (5-10 min each), two surveys, and an evaluation. The surveys assessed perceptions of EBP value, attitudes, and understanding. Data was analyzed using descriptive and bivariate statistics. A two-tailed paired t-test demonstrated statistically significant (t = 2.58, df = 8, p = 0.03) increase in nurses' attitudes toward adoption of EBP. Most participants (88%) recognized the importance of EBP, and (75%) identified specific actions for starting EBP. This program demonstrates promise in improving nurses' attitudes toward EBP, an essential first step in acculturating EBP. Delivery during onboarding and single module intervals is suggested to bolster sustainability and facilitate scale for the advancement of EBP across the nursing enterprise, regionally and nationally. </p>
