New Leader Mentoring: Guiding Nursing Leaders Of The Future

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Nursing leaders throughout our health care system are retiring or leaving at an alarming rate – over 60% of the nursing leader workforce is expected to leave in the next five years. Retention of new nurse leaders is crucial to retention of clinical nurses, morale, and patient outcomes. Development of a formal mentorship program between new nurse leaders and experienced nurse leaders is essential to reducing the intent to leave of leaders. The Aims of this project are to develop a mentorship program for new nurse leaders using an adaptation of the American Organization for Nursing Leadership Core Competencies, to implement and evaluate the mentorship program and to make recommendations for scaling and sustainability of the mentorship program. Methods of the project include weekly informational sheets for mentors/mentees to review, pre and post assessment of mentees’ knowledge, evaluation of the mentees’ knowledge by the mentor, and program evaluations. The project resulted in a significant increase in the mentees’ knowledge through the program. The results show that a formal mentorship program can assist in gaining knowledge for the mentee and reduce the chances the new nurse leader leaving their position.
