This project implemented a nurse-driven protocol on inpatient psychiatric units to increase metabolic screening compliance rates. The literature on improving metabolic screening as well as the clinical use of nurse-driven protocols were used to develop a protocol. The initial implementation of the protocol showed no change in screening rate; however, when the protocol was updated to include nursing leader involvement, metabolic screening increased. Nurses’ perception of the nurse-driven protocol was examined and found a negative perception and no change in empowerment when nurses were surveyed pre- and post-implementation.
