Also, the evidence indicates that second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs, a conventional treatment) increase the risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS) often leading to weight gain, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes (DM 2). U. S. correctional institutions, faced with increased rates of mental illness in its population, are confronted with the need to assure adequate monitoring for its patients treated with SGAs. This paper reviews guidelines for monitoring incarcerated patients to ensure early intervention that can improve clinical outcomes.
