This study also distinguishes between the way urban residents feel and act towards the problem of homelessness with the way that rural residents feel and act towards the problem of homelessness. Respondents were identified as urban or rural by using the nine party county codification scheme of rural-urban continuum codes from the United States Department of Agriculture. This study is a secondary data analysis of the 2002 General Social Survey (GSS), which has a sample size of 3,000 non-institutionalized English speaking adults.
