Abstract
dc:description.abstractAmerican composer Margaret Ruthven Lang (1867-1972) is perhaps best known today for her songs and choral pieces and as the first woman composer to have a work performed by a major American orchestra. Though her chamber and orchestral works have not survived, her piano pieces provide an important look at this neglected composer's art. This research paper presents an overview of Lang's complete published piano works, eleven works in total ranging from elementary to advanced levels and dating from 1894 to 1919. It is designed as a reference for piano teachers, students and performers and provides pedagogical information, musical examples and contemporary critical reaction as well as biographical information.
