Operational confidence and readiness in patrol-related law enforcement tasks: Perceptions of preparedness as officers advance from basic training into patrol

This study examined law enforcement trainees’ self-reported perceptions of readiness for patrol and their confidence in performing essential law enforcement skills at the conclusion of basic training. Addressing gaps in the literature on how trainees judge their preparedness at academy graduation, the study used a descriptive post-test survey design at a single Kansas law enforcement training academy to document overall readiness, confidence patterns, and differences based on prior experience or demographic characteristics. Participants (N = 89) completed the Readiness for Law Enforcement Service Survey during their final week of training. Trainees reported uniformly high readiness across all subscales, indicating strong perceived preparation for patrol. Confidence levels varied by task complexity, with higher confidence expressed by trainees in frequently practiced skills and lower confidence in complex or high-risk tasks. Confidence in scene management decreased as the number of individuals involved increased, suggesting perceived challenges associated with multi-party environments. Comparative analysis showed no significant differences in readiness across prior law enforcement, military, or corrections experience and no meaningful differences across age, gender, race and ethnicity, education level, or department type. Only two isolated subgroup differences emerged but involved very small groups. These findings contribute empirical data on trainees’ perceived readiness at the transition to patrol and highlight areas where confidence remains lower. The results may inform training decisions, reinforce the value of scenario-based practice, and support agencies in preparing new officers for early career responsibilities.
