Autistic and non-autistic fanfiction writers: Outsiders engaging in interest-based storytelling communities

Fanfiction is a type of fan-written fictional story about existing media. It is an interest-based activity offering numerous opportunities for social interaction and skill development. This study examined autistic and non-autistic fans’ experiences within fanfiction communities (FFCs) through the lens of grounded theory methodology. Results revealed that both groups follow similar pathways into FFCs consisting of increasingly transformative engagement with narratives, increasingly interactive engagement in community, and playing in a shared imaginary world. Successful engagement in FFCs results in writing growth, social growth, and fun. These findings provide insights into the complex interactions between strengths, motivations, and challenges in ASD and offer new avenues for interest-based interventions.
