Wichita State University tobacco cessation needs assessment

The goal of this study was to understand the tobacco use behaviors and cessation needs of Wichita State University’s (WSU) students and staff. The campus has a new impending tobacco free policy that will affect tobacco users more than any other group. Previous research indicated that smokers would prefer if cessation services were available on campus. This self-report survey captured the needs of tobacco users and analyzed the data by comparing different groups of tobacco users. The data revealed that there are two distinct classifications of tobacco users, i.e. social and dependent. Stark differences were found between these groups. Further, the needs assessment found that there is a strong need and desire for both prevention and comprehensive cessation services. The discussion focused on the recommendations of implementing comprehensive cessation services that will have impact on cessation attempts and the prevention of tobacco use.
