Understanding the impact of transitional traumas on transfer student wellness and well-being
Abstract
dc:description.abstractTransfer student mental health and well-being is slowly becoming a topic of discussion as research aims to understand the difficulties transfer students experience as they transition to new campus cultures. Prior research has focused on the impact on mental health and well-being after a student has transferred from one institution to another (Beiter et al., 2015; Mehr and Daltry, 2016). However, there is a need to understand the transition process and the impact that this experience has on transfer students’ mental health and well-being as they navigate changes to resources and support systems. Using a conceptual framework to examine Schlossberg’s Transition Theory in connection to Relocation Stress Syndrome, this research study will explore the lived experiences of transfer students during the transition processes using generic qualitative research methodologies. Visual and narrative inquiry elements drawing on LEGO® Serious Play® facilitation approaches are used to conduct focus groups and interviews with transfer students seeking baccalaureate degrees.
