In order to quantify the amount of insulin produced by the beta cells, different assays can be used to measure the concentration of insulin. Such assays include ELISAs and RIA. Both of these assays are used in various labs for measuring hormones including insulin. A few drawbacks to the RIA are that the assay takes two days to perform and more importantly, involves the use of radioactive materials.
