COMPARATIVE BIOMECHANICAL ANALYSIS OF SURGICAL FIXATION TECHNIQUES WITHIN THE PROXIMAL TIBIA AND FUSION TECHNIQUES WITHIN THE LUMBAR SPINE
Abstract
dc:description.abstractNovel or augmented orthopedic surgical techniques have the potential to improve patient care and outcomes, but their efficacy is often difficult to quantify. Establishing biomechanical models of physiological trauma and repair within orthopedic load bearing tissues in cadaveric samples provides an essential first step toward proving a new technique's value by supplying the necessary research to inform decisions in clinical trials and clinical practice. This proposal contains three independent studies that compare current surgical standards of care against new or less understood alternative surgical techniques. Each of these studies aims to expand the current body of knowledge in its own specific area of application and suggests improvements to accepted standards of care. The knowledge garnered by research in these areas may lead to improvements in time management during surgery, cost effectiveness, and flexibility and ease of procedures. Validating novel techniques may also improve the non-invasiveness, fixation stability, and longevity of procedures, as well as decrease the risks of infection, failure, and subsequent revision surgery.
