Emerson, Nietzsche, and the Legacy of Method

While the Emerson-Nietzsche influence question is well established in the critical literature, most studies have investigated very narrow correspondences and have not integrated these observations into a broader theory of Emerson's influence. After reviewing the history of the question, the present study attempts an integrative theory, positing that "Joyous Science" can model much of what passed from Emerson to Nietzsche. Under that rubric, this study traces through both authors a method of style, a philosophical ethos, and an affirmative hermeneutic stance. More generally, the study suggests that, contrary to received views, an integrative approach to the Emerson-Nietzsche question is both possible and illuminating.
