SYNTHETIC AND MECHANISTIC PHOTOCHEMISTRY OF ALKOXY ANTHRAQUINONES: POTENTIAL UTILITY IN DRUG DELIVERY AND SYNTHETIC METHODOLOGIES
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThis project delves into the mechanistic details of the photochemical reactions of alkoxy-anthraquinones in various media in order to devise potential applications of these photoreactions. Currently, Photodynamic therapy relies on the generation of singlet oxygen in cells which is not efficient under hypoxic conditions such as that in cancer cells. Development and optimization of a water soluble caged anthraquinone that can release a biocidic aldehyde, 4-HNE, upon photolysis, has been studied as a possible alternative to overcome this limitation of photodynamic therapy at present. The impact of variations in substitution, conditions and additives on the course of the mechanistic pathways involved in the process, are investigated.
