SEEKERS NO MORE: HISTORICAL SOURCES OF AMERICAN VOLUNTARYISM

As the twenty-first century gets underway, Americans are shopping for faith as never before. Voluntaryism in American religion is nothing new. The megachurch is simply another form of institutionalized revivalism as voluntaryism became normative within elements of American Evangelicalism. This particular thesis explores the nature of religious voluntaryism as evident in certain sixteenth and seventeenth-century historical tributaries. These trends shaped segments of American Evangelicalism, namely the seeker church movement and its revivalistic methodology. The early reformers opened the door for what became a clear-cut voluntaryism and this history should be explored to fully understand the development of the contemporary American seeker church movement.
