The Future of the Already Built

The submitted publications, projects, and commentary demonstrates the foundation of a sustained forward-thinking approach to the development of the existing built environment, combined with innovation in the pedagogical approach to the teaching of architecture, adaptive reuse, and interiors. I am one of the first authors to discuss adaptive reuse as a stand-alone theoretical and pedagogical subject, rather than as a peripheral adjunct to architecture or interiors, as such I have received global recognition as an authority on the subject. This emphasis upon future of the already built is supported by publications and projects that cross the boundary between installation-art, architecture, interiors, and adaptive reuse. It is further reinforced by publications about the directly connected pedagogy. This body of work demonstrates an acute grasp of the shifting social, cultural, and ecological contexts within which the subjects of architecture and interiors are understood and taught, while also reflecting the future-orientated, sustainable, and cultural heritage informed nature of the disciplines in the twenty-first century. The basis of my contribution to the understanding of the Future of the Already Built is development of the principles of adaptive reuse, the creation of a methodology for adaptive reuse as a recognised architectural practice, the construction of a proven pedagogical system for the teaching of architecture, adaptive reuse, and interiors, and from these, the development of a definition for the adaptive reuse.
