Among children, obesity has increased most significantly in the 12-19 year old age group. It is well established that obesity is associated with markers of metabolic dysfunction that increase the risk of development of chronic diseases including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD), and these risk factors have been reported in college students. Transition from high school to college is characterized by changes in lifestyle and dietary habits that are associated with weight gain, and patterns established at this critical life stage can affect long-term weight management and development of CVD risk.
