Analysis and evaluation of a reusable engine packaging system

The research work presented in this thesis is concerned with evaluating a newly designed reusable engine packaging system which has been proposed by the Holden Engine Company for transporting engines manufactured in Australia to the Opel Company in Germany. A description of the experimental analysis carried out in order to obtain the data required to validate the Finite Element (FE) model is given. The selection of material properties and boundary conditions for modelling the engine rack prototype was undertaken prior to comparing the FE model with the set of obtained experimental data. Simulated environmental conditions were used to predict the response of the rack in terms of engine displacement at the points of contact with the rack and the energy transfer to the engine due to a parameterised shock. The measurements, theoretical analysis and simulation studies described in this project illustrate a general procedure that may be used to evaluate new engine packaging system designs or modifications to existing design.
