Over the past decades, there have been a large number of enclosed shopping centres built across the world. In turn, there has been an increase in major fires and loss of life. Enclosed shopping centres are perceived to have lower fire risks than other commercial buildings in Australia. However, evidence has shown that this is not always the case, in particular, the fire in September 2006 at the Myer store in Hobart.
