The effects of production techniques on the yield and quality of some leafy vegetables

An opportunity exists for Australia to satisfy the expanding Asian fresh produce markets, because of our climate, space and technology to expand and enhance production of fruit and vegetables. Growers always strive to obtain maximum yields of high quality produce from their fields. Many factors such as climate, suitable cultivars, cultivation practices, soil, availability of water and nutrients can influence yields of high quality produce. An important and effective method to reduce costs is to improve productivity while maintaining quality. East Gippsland, the focus of this study, has a significant opportunity and potential for the production of fresh whole and fresh - cut packaged, branded vegetables for the domestic and export markets. The aim of this research was to investigate the effects of current irrigation practices on overall yield and the occurrence of hollow stem in broccoli and to compare the outcomes from different irrigation systems.
