The fall in the operational efficiency, aggravated by the riverine nature of the port of Calcutta is widely held responsible for the decline in the port's performance and the sagging demand for its services. The survival of the Calcutta-Haldia port complex is particularly critical as it serves as a lifeline to a vast hinterland with a rich industrial and resource base, comprising of the eastern part of the Indian subcontinent and also including the neighbouring landlocked countries of Nepal and Bhutan.
