House as box

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Early in this century Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies van der Rohe, among others, made conscious efforts to break the box. Since boxes contain, breaking the box liberates. In building a box parameters are set for enclosing. Can a house be closed in or can there be a simultaneous opening and closing when the idea of box is applied to a house? Can a house become a box or can a box become much more than a box?
