Edocentric Architecture: Reconciling the Past with the Present

In the words of David Hughes, "Afrocentric Architecture is a distinctive manifestation in a modern building environment which derives from the cultural, environmental and historical origins of the continent of Africa." In recent years, there has been a resurgence that seeks to define what it truly means for architecture to be afrocentric. The work engages so-called Five Pillars of Afro-centric Architecture defined by The Community Planning and Design Initiative Africa (CPDI Africa), namely Culture and Tradition, Aesthetics and Form, Spiritual Nature, Local Materials, and Community Engagement, to search for an afracentrism in the context of a dwelling in southern Nigeria's Edo-culture.
