The purpose of the study was conceived as a search for possible ways of helping some young people who appeared to be greatly in need of help. That purpose implied the problem of the study: to set up a procedure for studying the cases of social and personal conflict, as observed in an American secondary school, one promising of solutions for the difficulties involved.
