The use of peer-group slang in young adult fiction /

Every culture and every region within countries around the world has its own slang. Its informality and creativity attracts many people to use it as part of their daily language. It is a tool in communication that gives us social and personal identity. This means that with our individual communication and speech we can identify with a group and its speech. Since humans are social animals, we enjoy informal language, such as slang, because of its casual, vivid, racy, irreverent, and playful elements that can intertwine. We can say that slang rebels against the standard and adds some sort of social meaning to a word (Adams, 2009). The subject of the research is the use of peer-group slang in Anthony Burgess’s novel “A Clockwork Orange”. The primary aim of this paper is to analyse the specificity of peer-group slang according to its origin in Anthony Burgess’s “A Clockwork Orange”. To achieve this aim the following objectives have been set: to provide a theoretical overview of issues related to slang and peer-group language; to distinguish peer-group slang according to its origin; to analyse the reasons for the use of peer-group slang. The following methods have been used to conduct the research: the analysis of theoretical material has provided a possibility to review various issues concerning slang in general and peer-group slang; descriptive analysis has been applied in order to explain as well as interpret the examples of slang items; statistical analysis has allowed to systematise and graphically display the collected information.
