Abstract
dc:descriptionThe Identification of the Political Forces, Forming a Negative Image of the Republic of Lithuania in the Polish Press. The Case of Rzeczpospolita and Gazeta Wyborcza The main aim of the work is to analyze two Polish newspapers called „Gazeta Wyborcza“ and „Rzeczpospolita“ and to find out, what kind of political forces shape a negative image of Lithuania in the Polish Press. Claryfying the conception of „political forces“, it is emphasized, that during the content analysis, the consideration is taken into what people are cited and who are the authors of the articles, containing a negative image of the Republic of Lithuania. Additionally, political views and political affiliation of authors, also cited people are identified in order to find out the answer to the main question/aim of this work. In order to achieve the objectivity of the study, the following tasks are raised: The first part of the thesis introduces several media definitions, emphasizes what terms will be used in work, discusses the functions of media and its‘ power of problem construction, introduces the theories of media impact on society, defines and classifies the Polish media model, ilustrates the interaction of media and political forces, gives the examples of Polish media system analyzing researches. The second part of the study introduces the method of the analysis, creates a content analysis instrument. Attributes necessary for the quantitative content analysis are introduced: the variables and their meanings to which analized units (authors and cited people) will be categorized. The third part of the thesis introduces the analyzis of two polish dalies – „Rzeczpospolita“ and „Gazeta Wyborcza“ . The study was carried with the help of following keywords: Lithuania, Lithuanians, Poles in Lithuania, the Polish minority in Lithuania. The study discovers cited people and authors‘, who form negative image of Lithuania, tendency. Also the study evaluates, what themes related to Lithuania, Polish Press depicts mostly, and which topics are not relevant. Moreover, find the answers for the research questions: how Lithuania is portrayed? Are the elements of complaint found? If so, what analysis units (authors and cited people) are thought to be guilty of the prevailing situation? How the Polish Press depicts the future perspectives of polish-lithuanian relations? The study forms a hypothesis, according to that, possibly Lenkų Rinkimų Akcijos (Poles‘ Electoral Action) members are mostly contributed to the formation of the negative image of the Republic of Lithuania in the Polish Press. This hypothesis is abolished in the empirical part of the thesis. The conclusions of the research identified, that in „Gazeta Wyborcza“ people attributed to centre- right, the right-wing conservative and center – liberal political views, the members of Liberaų ir Centro Sąjunga (Liberal and Centre Union), Platforma Obywatelska (Civil Platform), Prawo i Sprawiedliwość (Law and Justice), Lietuvos Respublikos Liberalų Sąjūdis (Liberals Movement of the Republic of Lithuania) - negatively depict Lithuanian Republic in the Polish Press. In „Rzeczpospolita“ daily – people attributed to left, center-left, center-liberal political views, the members of Lietuvos Socialademokratų partija (Social Democratic Partyof Lithuania) and Liberalų ir Centro Sąjunga (Liberal and Centre Union) – negatively depict Lithuanian Republic in the Polish Press.
