Abstract
dc:descriptionBachelor thesis “Personality traits in the face of politician and elector choice” aims to take a closer look at political psychology discipline. Tries to identify how important is the face perception of the politicians and how perception of the face can predict electoral success. Also, this empirical survey is looking for correlation between personality traits perception and real results from elections. To find out these correlations and identify which personality trait is the most important for a political leader. In the experiment, 89 participants were presented with the faces of a winner and a runner-up (overall 40 political candidates). They were asked to decide which of them are more competent, honest, warm, dominant and attractive. All these five personality traits, proven, are most likely comprehensible from the person’s face. To ensure, that judgments of competence, dominance, honesty, warmth and attractiveness were based only on facial appearance and not on prior person knowledge, politicians who were recognized by any respondent were excluded from the analysis. This survey hypothesized that there is a correlation between face perception and real election’s results. The other hypothesis claims that it is possible to predict the winner and a loser, while evaluating politician’s personality traits. The empirical part of this analysis showed, that competence and attractiveness are those personality traits, which can be defined as a key cue in the face, and at the same time can determine a political leader. It is important to concrete, that this analysis includes only a small part of Lithuanian society – students who are studying political science. Results also showed high percentage of prediction while predicting political winner and losers. Respondents predicted 85 % of political leaders and 75 % of a losers. Regression analysis showed, that participants are more likely to evaluate politician’s competence and attractiveness. Also analysis showed, that only competence and attractiveness have a strong correlation with respondent’s choice to vote for one or another candidate. This research claims the importance of such analysis in Lithuania, but just for a bigger population. It also challenges political behavior discipline, highlights the importance of non-verbal information in politics.
