dc:description

Literature in Secondary Education Programs as an Instrument of National Identity Politics. It is hard to see the function of ideology in democratic state. One of the fields, where the impact of ideology can be seen in educational policy. Secondary education programs that are provided by political institutions are itself, believed, political and ideological. Lithuanian language and literature training serves as a source of collective memory. This unique feature of the literature can be used to construct national identity and national narrative. The key question of this thesis is how literature in secondary educational programs constructs national identity of Lithuanians and how it is changing through the different programs in years. Aim of the thesis is, using qualitative content analysis understand national identity politics through literature in secondary education programs as well as to see the openness of the identity toward European identity and culture. The object of analysis is politics of Lithuanian national identity through literature in secondary educational programs. Four tasks were raised to achieve the aim of the thesis: 1) determine models of national identity; 2) using qualitative content analysis, find out the change of politics on national identity throughout literature teaching in secondary education programs from 1994 until 2016; 3) define what kind of national identity is constructed and how it is changing; 4) determine the openness of national identity in order to see integration of European identity and culture. The main findings of this analysis are the following: 1) according to all programs, the main priority of politics is encouraging civic identity. 2) civic identity is seen as constitutional patriotism, individualism, heroism, freedom and sacrifice for the state and nation; civic identity is seen as the Balts culture, mythology and Lithuanian language. Language is the main factor which reflects ethnics and its heritage; 3) Lithuanian identity is based on openness – European culture and identity are seen as integral parts of national identity; 4) religion is very important in both kinds of identities and plays major role in programs.
